We are pleased to offer our revised version of this beautiful reproduction of a United States 1860 Naval Cutlass.  The Naval Cutlass was used for attack and defense in boarding and taking possession of an enemy ship.
The Model 1860 Cutlass replaced the USN Regulation Model 1841 during the Civil War (1860-1865) and was unique with its "Cuillere a pot" or soup ladle style shell guard.  The Model 1860 Cutlass design produced the most elegant cutlass of all: Both aesthetically pleasing and well balanced, creating an efficient fighting tool within the confined quarters aboard warships.  About 22,000 of the 1860 Naval Cutlasses were produced by Ames for the Navy, and 300 were purchased by the U. S. Army.  The survival rate for naval arms was very low because many naval cutlasses went down with the ships.
The cutlass has a polished brass basket for hand protection with a comfortable, genuine leather grip with twisted wire.  The tempered high carbon steel blade has a length of 25 1/2 inches (64.8 cm) and is complete with Navy Anchor and Maker's / Inspector's Marks stamped near the grip of the sword.  The blade is 3/16 inch (4.8 mm) thick and 1 1/16 inches (2.7 cm) wide at the midpoint.  The blade can be custom engraved with up to three lines of text.  Please specify the desired location and orientation of the engraving when ordering. This U.S. 1860 Naval Cutlass measures 31 3/4 inches (80.6 cm) overall and weighs 2 1/2 pounds (1.13 kg).
Accompanying the sword is a leather scabbard that now features the regulation copper rivets on the backside and a plain tip.  Also, the scabbard has an attached leather "Frog" that allows the sword to be hung from a belt.  The cutlass with scabbard and frog weighs 3 pounds (1.36 kg).  This cutlass comes with an unsharpened blade, just like the extremely rare antique cutlasses produced by the original manufacturers.  However, you can easily sharpen the blade yourself.
The U.S. 1860 Naval Cutlass comes complete with a real leather scabbard and frog for only $162.50.  We also carry the similar 1860 Naval Officer's Cutlass and less expensive Naval Cutlasses.
